The Road Chose Me Volume 2: Three years and 54,000 miles around Africa
My friend Etienne bought himself a Zodiac and quickly made it his personal mission to explore every river in all of Yukon. We can add the Lynn Canal (in Alaska) to that list.
I accompany him on various trips throughout the summer, camping, hiking and fishing wherever we go.

For some reason we decide it would be a good idea to make the ~1hour trip in the Ocean from Skagway to Haines in Alaska. I’m driving the zodiac slowly along as we troll for Halibut when a couple of whales start breaching a hundred meters or so in front of us. It’s extremely beautiful and calm, so we all stop whatever we’re doing and watch. Suddenly an enormous whale breaches only 10 meters in front of us, spraying us with water. When it goes underneath us I say “Uh, hold on”.
Luckily, it doesn’t flip us when it pops up again 50 meters away

With so few roads, and so many lakes, a boat really is the best way to get around in the Yukon in the summer.
