Hi Inge,
I had a decal shop make the map itself, which is a big sticker. It’s clear, and I just paint the line on with a paint pen.
Last trip I painted the whole map and the line with just a paint pen. I traced the original map from one I printed onto paper. It also worked really well. See it here – Around Ushuaia.

Hey Don,
There are a million considerations that come into play here, not least of all about personal preference. Think long and hard about if you want interior living space – how long is the trip? How challenging will the weather/bugs/humidity be?
After years on the road, there is only one thing long-term overlanders want – it’s not a bigger bumper, bigger tires or another winch.
It’s interior living space!

Hi Dan, my friends and I want to go on a road trip throughout Europe and America. I wanted to know how to modify a Jeep Wrangler or similar model to connect a boat propeller to the battery and attach some floating (I don’t know the word in English) I’ve seen a Jeep with two orange things similar to kayaks, to keep it afloat. My plan is to make a Jeep amphibious, I know it’s possible because I’ve seen two guys do it, I just don’t know how to do it or what materials I need. I’m not sure if you can answer my question, I came to this website because I was searching for an adventurer who’s also an expert on Jeeps.

I’ve heard that African safari/game parks have vehicle restrictions in terms of height/weight. Do you know what these generally are? I’m pretty sure the large expedition vehicles (Unimog. MAN, etc.) can’t get in some places, but beyond that I don’t know.

I think very large vehicles are almost always allowed, but they are just stupidly expensive. Many of the parks in Botswana for example my Jeep (less than 2.4 tons) was $50USD per day. A big MAN truck my friend was driving was $500 USD per day.
So it’s gets crazy expensive really fast!
There are probably good websites around with all the rates if you google – countries like South Africa, Botswana and Namibia are good at putting that stuff online.

Thanks for the info. I’m only partway through your blog, but I haven’t read anything about breakdowns or repairs. How reliable has the Jeep been? They aren’t particularly known for reliability, plus lots of people say you should get a vehicle that has a large worldwide dealer network and that local mechanics will have parts for and know how to fix (e..g a Land Cruiser). Obviously you went a different route. I’m curious about your reasoning on that and how it’s been working out.

If you are very worried about breakdowns and spares, then yes, a Land Cruiser is a very good choice. But to be honest it’s not something that happens often with newer vehicles, so it’s not a huge focus of my trips. I really didn’t need parts, so a dealer network is not something I care to much about.

Anyway, how reliable has the Jeep been? How often have you had to repair it, and did you have to find a dealer or could a local mechanic do it? Some people say you should only attempt this kind of trip in a vehicle that has an extensive dealer network and is widely sold around the world (like a Land Cruiser) so mechanics will know how to fix it and spare parts will be available.

The Wrangler was extremely reliable. It never broke down, never left me stranded. I tore the boot on the front driveshaft, so it spat out all the grease, and finally the joint because very noisy. So I just removed it for a few weeks until I could re-built the joint and put it back on.
Other than that, not a single issue!

Hello! First let me thank you for all your responses on YouTube. I go be “s” on youtube. I will be hopefully within a year to be a full time overlander. I deeply thank you for your follow up comments of questions I have. I have alot because of being a new full time overlander. With that said I have 1 book of yours and 2 more coming from Amazon so you don’t have to answer these questions if you answered them in your books. So here it goes. In Africa with most of it being a 3rd world countries how do you do or get for oil changes, do laundry and do you have a portable toilet? I appreciate you allowing me to pick your brain. Out of all yhe youtubers your the only one who have answered my quetions. Hopefully someday I will be able to meet you at a show or expo or just out overlanding. Take care bud and thank you.

You are very welcome! My goal is to inspire and help other people get on the road, so I’m happy to do anything that can help!
1. oil changes – there are always places that will do it for you at or near gas stations, and when you buy the oil the change is free. I always did it myself just because I wanted it done right, and I wanted to look over the Jeep. It’s easy.
2. Laundry I did by hand a bucket. There really are not many places you can pay to have it done in Africa, and it worked the way I did.
3. I don’t have a toilet, I would use the gas stations or whatever, or use the shovel !

I enjoy your videos — except for the speeded up driving down the road images. When you stop the fast driving video and show the area/wildlife and people I find it to be the best parts of your videos. Your later videos of you talking about and showing the vehicle etc. are much easier to watch. I look forward to seeing some “slow” driving in Australia.

I’m sure the charge controller would fit, but it also wants some airflow so that wouldn’t be great. I don’t think the 50Ah battery would fit under the seat, but I never did measure it.

I am a faithful follower of each of your programs and I never wanted to bother with questions but now it is ready to pick up my new Jeep Gladiator Rubicon Diesel 2021 and as we want to use it for Overlanding for several months a year , moreover, we are two Argentines who live in Quebec and the salt, snow and small rocks in winter are everywhere I wanted to know your opinion, if possible, on the importance or not of making the anti-rust protection like the one offered by Jeep / Mopar from the Mastershield company that It costs $ ca 1,000 + tax, with a lifetime guarantee.
Just know your opinion based on your knowledge and based on your experience with your Jeep and with the jeeps of your friends, will be highly valued.

My Jeep I drove around Africa actually has the anti-rust coating from Jeep, and it does make a huge difference. The frame still looks basically brand new where it was coated, which is great. If I were driving on salty roads in Quebec and Ontario, I would get it done for sure!

Hi Dan, I came across one of your video a few days ago while researching the Dempster, and have watched several dozen since. All excellent! Well done, my friend. I feel as though I’ve gotten to know you pretty well. I’ve made 7 trips to Canada over the last 20 years, and feel as you do that the Canadians are a special people who live in a spectacular part of the world. In my journeys always have a sea kayak with me for exploring coastlines and lakes. Though it has allowed me access into some remote places, I would like to better equip my road vehicle to take me deeper into areas from which I can launch my boat. I’ve got a 2002 Tundra, and though I’d considered the Sprinter option I realized, and you have affirmed it, that the best vehicle for me is the one I currently own. Accordingly, I’m looking into upgrading my Tundra suspension to be more capable than what came stock. Mine is a 4X4 TRD version with extra cab, a canopy and rack for my kayaks. I’ve made an appointment with a local shop to assess for suspension upgrade, and when I receive that’ I’d like to run it past you for your comments. I’m currently building a set of truck-bed drawers, and plan to remove the back seat and create a cabinet storage system for camera gear, other gadgetry, and possible location for some water storage and a small fridge. Recommendations on the fridge would be helpful as well. Lastly, for now, my canopy is only cab height, and so my rig, while providing a comfortable sleeping platform atop the drawer system is lacking a proper living space. Getting a canopy with more headroom is unlikely because I don’t want the kayaks to sit too high. Any thoughts, other than relying on a ground tent and a nice awning? Okay, all for now. Let me know if there’s a better way to correspond. Thank you for being such an inspiring presenter and educator. As a now retired, and much beloved Biology prof of 30+ years, I know a thing or two about standing at the podium, and you’re doing a masterful job. Keep those videos coming. Love your content! We are planning on a multi-month trip through Australia in 2024. Most of it we plan on renting a campervan, but have interest in an overland excursion. We would like to rent an equipped Jeep and spend time in a place that a campervan is not suitable. We do not want to go it alone, but join a group. Do you have recommendations on a company or outfit that offers this? So far I have not had luck…

There are plenty of places that will rent an outfitted Land Cruiser.. but I don’t know of any that will rent a Jeep.

Does anyone know about shipping a landcruiser that has a auxiliary 200ah lithium battery in a shipping container? I’m wanting to ship from Melbourne to Mombasa and then from Cape Town to Rotterdam after that. Is it a bureaucratic nightmare to ship a vehicle with an auxiliary battery? Should I just go with an AGM battery instead to make things easier?
