Shipwreck Beach

Just to the North of Luanda lies a beach littered with shipwrecks. From what I understand the currents around Luanda are treacherous, and many of these ships were washed ashore here when they pulled their anchors. Eventually, they were abandoned, and simply sit where they stopped.

The many shipwrecks stretch far into the distance

Some of the ships appear to have been partially salvaged

In the other direction too!

We find a fantastic hidden place to camp slightly elevated and out of sight, and again immediately set about doing absolutely nothing. Watching both sunrise and sunset over the shipwrecks is spectacular, and I thoroughly enjoy sitting still again after the trek through the DRC.

Bit of info: I was told that all these ships were actually abandoned here by Portuguese owners when the civil war started . They were expecting to return in couple of weeks, perhaps months. But then it dragged on for 30 years, and so did the ship anchors.
