The Mountains of Togo

I have been told many times the mountains around Kpalimé are a highlight of Togo, so I make my way there, and am not at all disappointed. Kpalimé itself is a mountain town with a bustling market where I resupply, before heading up the nearest mountain and eventually winding my way along a road that directly follows the Togo/Ghana border. A couple of times my GPS says I’m actually on the Ghana side of the border, though without the stamp in my passport I don’t think it counts.

Every single person is extremely friendly, immediately bidding me welcome and waiving enthusiastically. People don’t ask for anything, and since entering I have noticed Togo is much cleaner than the countries I have been to recently.

I’m on a mission to get somewhere in particular high in the mountains, and pick the smallest roads I can find in order to get there. On one road I come across a bridge with some very dubious looking planks of wood covering large holes. I think about it for a long time and in the end decide it’s not worth messing with. The consequences of dropping even one corner of the Jeep through the bridge are serious, so I turn around and find a different way up and into the mountains.

Happily that brings me to an even bigger, more impressive bridge that is perfectly fine to drive across.

  1. You went farther on that bridge than I ever would!

Great progress. That bridge looked like it would collapse glad you made it through. I see your enthusiasm is still high.
