Touring Overland Shows in 2019

Over the next four months I am touring with the Jeep to virtually all the Overland and large Jeep shows in North America.
‘The Jeep That Conquered Africa’ will be on display, and I’ll be on hand to answer questions, give tours of the Jeep and generally hang out.

I will be presenting slideshows and speaking on discussion panels about my time in Africa, my Jeep and everything I have learned along the way.

    Hi Dan,
    Congratulations!
I crossed Australia from east to westcoast, the Simpson desert in a Toyota in 1984 which, at the time was a real challange but what you did is outstanding! I followed you since Mauretania and must say that your trip around Africa was amazing.
I’ curious what your further plans may be after all the shows and expos?
    All the best.
    Nico

      Hey Nico,

Thanks for the kind words! Your expedition in ’84 sounds awesome. I can only imagine what Africa would have been like back then!
After the expos I don’t have a concrete plan yet. I have lots of dreams and ideas and a few irons in the fire, but nothing is actually locked in yet.

Congrats on the successful trip Dan! Going to miss your posts on here. I remember your reddit post way back when and how everyone was saying you were going to get yourself killed, well, jokes on them now. Your trip is a true inspiration and I wish you well in the future.

    PS. It’s “Pennsylvania” :p

    • Dan Grec says:

      Thanks Eric!

That sure feels like a long time ago! I will do an AMA update on Reddit in about a week, that should be interesting!

Also, plenty of new photos and adventures to come.

Dan: I have loved watching your adventures in Africa. From the first Jeep build, I was hooked.

As far as places to visit regionally, the NJ Jeep Invasion in Wildwood NJ should be on your radar.
Imagine: you get to drive the same Jeep on the sands on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean! Not many people could say that.
It is just after the Butler Pa Bantam Jeep Festival.
Could be a longer drive to the west coast, but what an opportunity for you!!

      Hey Warren,

Thanks for the suggestion, it’s on my list, but it’s a loooong way from where I’ll be and very, very late in the season, so currently I’m leaning towards “no” for that one. We’ll see.

Absolutely loved reading/living vicariously through your African adventure. Very inspiring and educational. I’m sure you have touched alot of lives along the way. Congrats and I will be ordering your book about Alaska to Argentina asap!

Hello Dan! Been following your journey since the beginning! Would be incredible if you might consider both the Vermont Overland Bird Watching Safari (my favorite overland rally of them all in Vermont (https://www.vermontoverland.com/vobs) would be an incredible experience to have you there! Hope it may be an option for you and your story. Cheers, Jennifer

    Dan,
We met briefly at Expo West before your round table on boarder crossings. My husband and I are in the white Sprinter in the Goose Gear booth. You may want to check out RecCon MT that is being held in Missoula, MT. It’s the weekend before Big Sky Overland Rally, which is on your list above. https://www.recconmontana.com/

We will be attending / presenting at NWOR, BCOR and RecCon MT.

    Have a nice weekend.

    • Dan Grec says:

      Hi LeeWhay,

Thanks very much, that’s great info. I just sent them an email asking if they’re interested in having me at the show.
I will see you at NWOR and BCOR for sure!!
I’m looking forward to some chill time around the campfire!

Hi Dan. First, thank you very much for sharing your adventures. I admit that I’ve only followed along for the past few months but you’re a true inspiration and my wife and I hope to embark on a very similar journey in the next few years (i.e., the Americas and Africa). I really enjoyed your book on traveling the Americas – a great primer!

As a fellow Canadian, I’m having a tough time deciding on a vehicle. I know people have taken all sorts of odd and uncommon vehicles on these trips, but, I want to try to keep things simple and use a vehicle that I can get repaired easily anywhere. Unfortunately, the LandCruisers weren’t sold here and the used market is very thin. The Lexus version is also tough to come by, and, expensive.

As a previous Jeep owner, I love the Jeep idea. My only concern is, when it comes time to fix it in South America or Africa, how difficult is it going to be to get parts, find a dealership, or even will a bush mechanic have even seen one before? I’m really struggling with the fact that while it’s a simple and accessible vehicle in North America, it may be a very poor choice once out of the US and Canada.

I know you had relatively few issues with your Jeep, but, if you did, how confident were you that there were easy solutions around you? What do you recommend?

Thanks for your thoughts! Looking forward to your next adventure.

    • Dan Grec says:

      Hi Brian,

You are very welcome for all the photos, stories and adventures. It’s my pleasure to share it and help others to get out there!

For sure the Jeep is going to be harder to fix or find parts for than a Toyota, but don’t think that a Tundra or Tacoma would be good – these are non-existent in Africa and most of South America. So the reality is that when we’re limited to North American vehicles, there is nothing that is *perfect*. So in that regard my advice is to stop looking for perfect, and look for something that meets your needs, is well maintained, and you are comfortable with.

For myself I always knew if something major went wrong with the Jeep I’d likely get a friend to send parts over from the US and I’d be doing whatever it took – but that’s all just part of the trip, and not something I view as a “failure”.

I know my answer doesn’t help you decide. Vehicle choice is very personal, and we all have to figure out what we’re comfortable with.

      Good luck!

      -Dan
