Sorry it took me so long to get back to you. I’m working on another project right now, which I’ll tell you about soon.
I might get some help from you if you don’t mind. More to come on that later.

As for your VW van, it sounds absolutely perfect! My brother bought a 1980 van and loves it. With diesel, I think it would be unbeatable.
As for Mexico border crossing.. I don’t think there is too much difference. In any case, cross first thing in the morning (like 7 or 8am) and drive for the entire day to get as far from the border as you can. The most dangerous place in any central American country is the borders, so I always got away from them before nightfall.

I have 1998 2.4 L cargo van (T4) in Europe) simple diesel and runs way better on old type diesel than on a new low sulfur one. I actually run it on used veggie oil as well and drove to Prudhoe Bay last summer actually on veggie oil. Came back to Toronto on diesel.
This trip I will do on diesel only.
At Deadhorse I met some people and they added the pics and the little story about me and my veggie van to they’r blog.

I will be leaving Toronto around Oct.13-14 heading to Colorado and Las vegas and from there straight south.
Still now Idea where would be the safest boarder crossing to Mexico?

Hey Andres,

It sounds like you’ve had some big adventures. Very, very cool.
I think a VW diesel van will be absolutely ideal for the PanAm adventure you have planned. It’s great you say it’s high from the gound – I think that is a lot more important than 4×4. To be honest, I only used 4×4 in my Jeep when I was actually trying to go somewhere a bit silly – it’s not needed if you keep it sensible. High ground clearance is great to have, there are sections of very bad road.
Depending on what year your VW is, I would check into how it will handle bad quality / very high sulfur diesel. Newer diesels require very low sulfur diesel, and there is a good chance the computer will shut it down or make it run very badly if it doesn’t get the correct quality. I know for sure Bolivia and Peru have terrible quality diesel. Probably more countries too.

Fantastic, what you’ve been doing. Planning to drive south from Toronto to Ushuaia in three weeks from now.
Been reading several blogs and I like your very much because of your optimism in every situation.
My question for you would be , Will I be able to do the same trip on Vw Diesel van , front wheel drive only but quite high from the ground.
Did Toronto DeadHorse Toronto last summer, 21 000 km, Have driven Cairns to Hobart and both islands on NZ, Russia as well.

I think about snowboarding most days, funny how the grass is always greener. Still thinking I’ll try to work as an instructor in Chile or Argentina if it’s at all possible.

Winters a little dry but on the lighter side just got off a two week roadie with three Ozzys from Mt Hotham up in th hills between Melbourne and Sydney. Went up through Big Sky, B irdger, Whitefish, Ferni, REvelstoke, SilverStar, Baker, then back through portland home. The boys and I became so tight that we decided the best thing for all of us would be for me to head out there for a season so I’m workin on me work visa and spending some time out there! should be siiiiick– Get on a board and ride my man– I bet you have no idea how much you miss it. I made a real point of not getting sponsorship this time around, I wanted it to be the ‘every person’ trip to show that anyone can do this if they want it bad enough.
